We're Engaged!…and we went to Vic Falls

Amanda:
Jonathan's school  is on break this month so we took the chance to get out of town and travel to Victoria Falls. When we left, our only goal was to make it Vic Falls, a trip we thought would take at least one week on either end…you can imagine our surprise when we arrived just three days later, thanks to great hitches and overnight train rides. Little did I know that Jonathan's sole purpose for the trip was to propose.

Jon:
Victoria Falls was amazing!  The falls themselves are almost a mile in length, so we wandered for about half an hour before I found the right place for the proposal.  It was at the far end of the falls with a great view down the length of the chasm.  Luckily we had the whole area to ourselves, and after I proposed we had several minutes to revel in our new commitment before anyone else even came into view.  It was perfect.  The whole trip was quite an adventure, just like our relationship has been, so it was only fitting that the proposal took place after 72 hours of running across the continent.  That night we celebrated with some much needed reminders of home: BLT's and gin and tonics.

 {Completely drenched from all the mist}

{The very cool overnight train}
After Vic Falls we went to Lake Kariba and took a 22 hour ferry ride across the lake. Getting to the port town was an adventure in and of itself since the road was void of any signs or mileage indicators and we found ourselves stranded in quite literally the middle of nowhere. After walking 7km in what we hoped was the right direction, two cars drove up, and then drove past us. Luckily they sent the owner of the hotel back to pick us up and save us from several more hours of walking. Turns out they are from Colorado and we became fast friends on the boat ride.

We decided to take the slow road home and stayed with other volunteers in Central Mozambique for another week before coming back to Inhamussua. Good thing too, because when we came back there were exactly three people at school - the two of us and the night guard. It was really fun to see other parts of this country and to experience some of the more touristy things that we don't normally get to do, plus every night felt like an engagement party with different friends.
{Sushi night in Vilakulos}
{The Bazaruto Archipelago, where we went for a snorkel trip}
