Week One

It's the heart of summer time here in Mozambique, which usually means an average temperature of about 90-95 degrees, plus humidity. This was very much the case on Sunday as we spent eight hours on a non-air conditioned bus from Maputo to Maxixe. Feeling the sweat drip down your back with little more physical exertion than just sitting on the porch, it's hard to find motivation to do much more. However a lack of food supplies around Inhamussua this week necessitated a trip into Maxixe yesterday, and we were thrilled to find some cloud cover when we were ready to leave. Feeling like the sky might open up with rain at any moment, we selfishly took the seats inside the cab of the truck that we took into town. It turned out to be a smart move since it started a downpour the minute we pulled away from school. As the rain increased, all the passengers in the back started to pass us their various bags and belongings through the window, including a baby. Only in Mozambique can a baby be handed through the window to a complete stranger without making a peep, and then proceed to pass out for the rest of the trip.

The rain let up when we arrived in Maxixe, just long enough to make it to the market. Luckily when it started up again we found ourselves under a shelter with a woman selling cokes, and a good view for playing around with my camera.
